About The Speaker...

I am an experienced speaker and my audiences have included WEA, U3A, Swan Hellenic Cruise ships, Cathedrals and Churches and various Universities and Colleges. Using extensive illustration, I present in a lively inter-active style and encourage questions and debate. I have Masters degrees in Art History, Theology and Philosophy, and particularly enjoy connecting the three disciplines. But I’m not dry and academic – i use humour, anecdote and debate in my teaching methods. I am a regular tutor for WEA both online and in person, and teach a number of Art History courses and always recruit well, with lots of students who have done multiple courses with me. I can tailor presentations to many different lengths and contexts.

About Their Talks...

Art and the Landscape

Some of our best loved paintings are landscapes – the idyllic country scenes of Constable, the atmospheric creations of Turner and the delightful Dutch and Flemish canals and windmills. This talk will trace the development of landscape art from early Northern Renaissance backgrounds via picturesque and Impressionist interpretations to recent landscape artists such as Peter Lanyon.

The Art of Christmas

The Christmas story has probably inspired more art than any other subject. From medieval icons of the Virgin and Child to the Renaissance paintings of the shepherds and the wise men; and from stained glass windows to Christmas cards, the story has been at the forefront of western art. This talk will examine how the gospel stories have been interpreted by artists through the centuries. A wide range of art will be shown.

Artists Interpretations of Easter

The story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus has been at the forefront of western art for 2,000 years – from early inscriptions in the catacombs, medieval altarpieces and Leonardo’s Last Supper, to the twentieth century works of artists such as Marc Chagall and Graham Sutherland. This talk examines the gospel narratives of the events of Holy Week and Easter and investigates how they have been interpreted by artists through the centuries.

Renaissance and Reformation

The century from 1450 – 1550 was momentous. A new way of doing art and of seeing human beings and their environment; the discovery of the ‘New World’; fresh insights into faith and the upheaval that created; and the end of the middle ages and the birth of modern Europe. This talk investigates Renaissance art in Southern and Northern Europe and traces the birth and development of the Reformation. The art of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and van Eyck and the thought of Luther and Calvin together with the reforms of Henry VIII all feature in this extensively illustrated talk.

Art and Symbols

Can you read the hidden meanings in paintings? For centuries artists have relied upon symbols to convey their intentions. But how do we find out what lies behind some of the most famous and less well known works of art? This extensively illustrated talk examines the wealth of symbolism in western art from the Renaissance and Baroque periods via the Pre-Raphaelites and the Impressionists to Surrealism and contemporary abstract art.
