About The Speaker...
Jane Barnes, dairy farmers wife & mother of two grown up kids (Charlotte and Harry) also is a general farm worker, calf rearer, book keeper, cleaner, PA and housewife! Former member of Young Farmers Clubs in my youth, met my husband there and became a business partner after 20 years of working on the farm! Since then we’ve built a brand new farm and two houses!
Born from a dairy farming family, it’s fair to say dairying is in the blood. Met and married my dairy farmer husband Mark about 30 years ago, when he introduced me to his 60 cow herd before meeting his parents! We’ve worked and lived together running the farm ever since. Mark is the third generation to milk cows on our farm and now our son Harry (4th gen) is now running the farm expanding up to over 300 cows!
Jane is passionate about educating the consumer how we produce milk from cows, in the 21st century. She now has over 25 school visits per year to the farm to show them how we produce milk from dairy cows! She also hosts groups for summer FARM TOURS so visitors can see for themselves the cows milking, feeding baby calves and have a ride on the Tractor & Trailer across our grassland in beautiful countryside. Finishing the tour with a tea and cakes and Stilton Cheese tasting of course! They also sell Stilton Cheese from the farm.
About Their Talks...
TALES FROM A DAIRY FARMERS’ WIFE – Jane Barnes tells her tales of her life on a family run dairy farm near Melton Mowbray – Rural Capital of Food. All the milk produced from a herd of 300 Friesian and Ayrshire cows, milked twice a day, is made into famous Blue Stilton Cheese at Long Clawson Dairy. Many humorous personal experiences and anedcotes of life on the farm with children and farm animals, true farm life stories are shared with the audience in a light hearted and educational way.
Giving her talks since 2001 about the farm has been a passion which Jane likes to share with the public as there are less than 7000 dairy farmers left in England and Wales. Each talk covers the latest issues and headlines which relate to farming topics in todays environmental and political landscape.
Jane will bring Stilton Cheese to sell after her talk, should member of the audience wish to purchase some to enjoy at home!
