About The Speaker...
I am a technical translator, formerly photography and physics lecturer. I live in a small village in Oxfordshire. Twenty years ago I started taking part in local theatre shows and in films and TV dramas. The filming is mostly background/supporting artist work (‘extra’), but I also get quite a few featured parts with dialgoue, mainly in training and promotional videos for organisations such as Slimbridge, healthcare bodies and various companies.
About Their Talks...
My talk is called My Life and Times as a Film Extra. It is illustrated with many slides and printed photos showing the daily experiences of a supporting artist on a film shoot, from the usual early morning call time through wardrobe and makeup, waiting to be called to set, having lunch, and lots of pictures showing me in the film or TV drama. How does one become a supporting artist? How much do you get paid? A great many anecdotes about interesting filming locations, meeting the stars, how one is treated by Production, and the great excitement and satisfaction of being part of an incredibly complex production in which dozens or even hundreds of people all contribute to the final film – in which you hope to see yourself eventually on screen, even if only for a second.
