About The Speaker...

I originally trained as a nurse then went as a nanny to Berlin for a year. On my return I retrained in secretarial skills working firstly as a secretary and then moving into teaching at night classes. Then I retrained again as a teacher/lecturer and worked for most of my career in Further and Higher Education culminating in being the Head of Faculty of Business and Management Studies in a large College of Further and Higher Education. I have had what might be called a portfolio career having worked in many different fields. We have been amateur property developers ie buying a house to do up, living in it at the same time and then selling it on. We then moved to Brittany to start up and run our own holiday business for 9 years before returning to the UK and subsequently retiring, but we travel a great deal and have had some brilliant travel experiences – we never call them holidays.

About Their Talks...

My talks are about different aspects of my life and what I have done. So one is about the highs and lows of being a town councillor and chairman of a town council; and the other is about moving lock stock and barrel to Brittany to start up and run a holiday business for 9 years – it was sink or swim as we had to earn our daily crust having no pensions to fall back on at that time..

A Life in the Day of a holiday business in Brittany

During our nine years we completely renovated our property, (one house had a roof and 3 trees growing inside it) including building a swimming pool, which we ran as a B&B with 2 holiday cottages. So the trials and tribulations of French bureaucracy (they invented it!) and the fun and laughter which we enjoyed when things were going well and the tears which we endured when things went dramatically wrong (eg an infestation of hornets).
This can be 30 minutes long or longer if required with powerpoint presentation if there is a projector

A Life in the Day of a Town Councillor

How do you become a town councillor, why would you do it, being elected, finding your feet on a very steep learning curve as to how to do your best for the residents of your town, where does a town council fit in the hierarchy of local government and wow how to ensure that your million pound annual budget is spent wisely for the benefit of the town
Obviously this is a non-political talk but inevitably there are questions which can lead into politics!
Again this can be as long as required and with a power point presentation if there is a projector
