Location: Norwich, Norfolk
About The Speaker...

I have lived with husband Victor in the riverside village of Thorpe St Andrew, just 3 miles east of Norwich, for nearly 20 years. Having always wanted to be a published writer, my opportunity arose when I was offered a place on the MA in Biography at the University of East Anglia, from where I graduated in 2014 at nearly 60 years of age. As a result Pen and Sword Books offered me a publishing contract for 3 books, the last of which was published in 2021.

About Their Talks...

Since my first book came out in 2016, I have taken my illustrated talks to groups around Norfolk and have given many online, especially during the Pandemic. My audiences include U3A, W.I., Probus, Retirement groups and History societies. Having done this for nearly nine years, I have decided to retire from face to face talks from end March 2025, but will continue to offer online virtual talks. I love the audience reactions to my storytelling, but with a vast county to drive around and four young grandsons my time is becoming more limited!

Fee:

£70 in person inside Norfolk until end March 2025.
£60 for virtual talks on line.

Escaping Hitler: A Jewish Boy’s Quest for Freedom and His Future

The true story of the remarkable and long life of a Kindertransport boy Günter Stern, who fled Nazi Germany, cared for by two very different British families, joined the British Army, opened a successful Travel business in Norwich from nothing, was an active fundraiser for Lions International for over 60 years, and was made Sheriff of Norwich in 1975. An uplifting true story of survival and success against all the odds. This is my debut book, published by Pen and Sword Books in 2016, and a year later it was distributed throughout America and Canada. I tell the story of Joe Stirling, alongside insights into my incredible research journey, including visiting the Rhineland to find Günter’s birthplace.

The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster 1874: Heroes, Victims, Survivors.

This catastrophic head-on collision between two Victorian steam trains just outside the City of Norwich, was described by the Court of Enquiry in 1874 as “the most serious collision between trains meeting one another on a single line of rails”. This unique account of the incident not only discusses the events that led to the accident, but most importantly discovers the diverse personalities involved, exploring the lives of those 27 who died, some notable survivors and the heroes who raced to the aid of the victims. I live less than half a mile from the collision site and have been fascinated by this local legend for over fifteen years. The story and hitherto unknown biographical details about the victims, survivors and heroes, became the subject of my third book, published by Pen and Sword Books in 2021, and shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Awards in the same year. 10th September 2024 will mark the 150th Anniversary of the Disaster, and the community of Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich will be commemorating the victims with a weekend of events, culminating in the unveiling of a bronze plaque, with the names of all 26 who died, to be dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich inside St Andrew’s Parish Church, on the morning of Sunday 15th September.

When the Medics Came to Norwich for the August 1874 BMA Conference

When the Medics Came to Norwich – stories from the 42nd Annual Congress of the British Medical Association August 1874. Hear about the many dinners, excursions, garden parties and exhibitions that took place alongside the worthy presentations on medical advancements of the day, such as anaesthesics, antiseptics and public health. Discover the infamous court case brought against a group of doctors by The Royal Society for Cruelty to Animals, then celebrating its fiftieth year and meet some of the doctors, some of whom will, within three weeks, will be directly involved in the Great Thorpe Railway Disaster, as victims, heroes or dedicated surgeons. This talk is the result of research into my third book on the railway disaster, and although there is no book as yet on the Conference, it gives an usual take on 19th century medical history.
